  1. Hippos are large semi-aquatic mammals with a large barrel-shaped body, short legs, a short tail and an enormous head.
  2. They are considered the second largest land animal on Earth after elephants.
  3. Hippos can weigh up to 8,000 pounds (4500 kg).
  4. They are native to sub-Saharan Africa.
  5. Hippos are herbivores and eat mostly grasses.
  6. They have greyish to muddy-brown skin which fades to a pale pink color underneath.
  7. Hippos have webbed feet that help them swim.
  8. They can hold their breath for up to five minutes underwater.
  9. Hippos are aggressive and territorial animals.
  10. They are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and poaching.
