Southern red-billed hornbill – bird in South African safari
Learn about Southern red-billed hornbill
The Southern Red-billed Hornbill (Tockus rufirostris) is a bird species found in the savannas and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa.
This hornbill species gets its name from its distinctive red bill, which is long and curved, and has a small casque (bony protuberance) on the upper mandible.
The Southern Red-billed Hornbill is an omnivore, feeding on insects, small reptiles, fruit, and seeds.
They are monogamous and nest in tree cavities, where the female seals herself inside the nest with mud and droppings, leaving only a small slit for the male to feed her and their chicks.
The Southern Red-billed Hornbill is considered a species of "Least Concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), although habitat loss and fragmentation due to human activities pose a threat to their populations in some areas.
